- Death among the missionaries due to tropical diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. This made many to return home without achieving much success
- The missionary were few in number and spent only short time in Sierra Leone. Most of them lacked missionary work experience. There were long period of activity in places were some converts were gained, there was a little follow up and the people reverted to their traditional practices.
- Many people regarded Christianity as a disruptive force, this was largely why many missionaries were killed and their churches destroyed during the Hut Tax uprising of 1898.
- Negative response of some local people and chiefs. They received little co-operation form many traditional rulers.
-The Portuguese were very much involved in the human Slave trade and the missionaries found it difficult to preach about love and humanity.
