IJMB
ANOTHER NUMBER 1

The practice of Jesus makes clear his way of relating to all people without prejudices or discrimination. In the only episode in which an exclusive view of the “House of Israel” is expressed, the Canaanite woman reminds him that “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the table of his master”. As soon as Jesus heard this, he immediately changed his attitude and declared: “O Woman, Great is your faith; it shall be done for you as you wish” (Matt 15:21-28).

Mary Magdalene was the apostle of victory over death: she was the first one to see Jesus resurrected, and was also the messenger of this great news, with the power to lift up the spirits, the faith and the courage of the “twelve” and of all disciples in their mission. Even when she was not part of the “group of the twelve”, it was her that opened the door to overcoming the faith crisis experienced by Jesus’ followers.

The communities – churches – of Jesus’ followers should be at the forefront of the assertion of equality between men and women, which signals not only “The Future Kingdom”, that the Father will realize, but should also be expressed in all steps taken to meet and carry out “God’s plan”. As a consequence of a certain influence from philosophical and cultural traditions that contaminated the original message of Jesus, the Catholic Church did not rest immune. It also participated in the prejudice, discrimination, segregation and the denial of women. Male sexist domination placed women in the position of “the origin and source of sin, linked to sexuality”.

However, there have been significant advances in the recognition of women as people and believers, who are entitled to the same rights and opportunities in the evangelization carried out by the community of Jesus’ followers. Yet, we have still not attained the situation, in Churches, where the relations between men and women fully reveal Jesus’ message and his work towards building the “Kingdom of God” in this world.

It is not only about the rules that prevent the Spirit of freely welcoming men and women, married or not, to ministries and church services. It is about a lack of sexual theology that could become an inspiring source of guidance for the steps to be taken towards effective gender equality and the meaning of love.
